Women of the Bible Discussion Group

Tables are done! We sent Christmas Cards & letters to Prisoners who are in prison because of their faith in Jesus Christ. We were able to write letters in their own language by using the drop down menu on Voice of the Martyrs site page -Prisoner Alert. What a great group of women! It is such a blessing to fellowship and share the Word of God with each other.

Early arrivals let me practice my camera skills on them...a little blurry but I will get better.

Genesis 2:15-17
GENESIS 2:15-17 (multiple versions NIV, KJ, NLT, American Standard)
The Lord God Creator of all things placed man in the garden of Eden. The man was to work and keep( guard, watch closely) the land.
What did God command?
That he could eat freely from any tree of the garden. BUT from the tree of knowledge of good and evil he shall not eat.
What did God declare would happen if the man ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil?
in the day that he eats from it he shall surely die.
Are we willing to have God set us in a place and do the work He has given us? Do we keep a careful watch over the territory given to us by God? Do we obey His commands as to what we can and cannot do within the place He has given to us? I confess that I don't tend to the garden as well as I should. I often see addicts and troubled youth on the bus & I have not spoke to them about Jesus. When I am on the check-out line and see parents who are overworked, tired & frustrated, I have not shared that Jesus said come unto me all who are weary...I will give you rest. Nor have I told my neighbors who are tense and fearful about the direction our nation seems to be headed...that Jesus said do not fear I have overcome the world. Surely if I am not providing life then am I responsible for death? If a physician knows how to save his fellow man and yet does not act because he is off duty-is that physician responsible for not using his gifts, talents, skills & knowledge? Where is our focus? Jesus said that we are to love God and to love others-that the whole of the commandments rest on those two.
God told the man to work & care for the garden. He commanded him not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good & evil. Because Adam & Eve disobeyed and ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil they were cast out of the garden. They would now experience death.
Jesus told us to love the Lord Our God and to Love others. Jesus told us to preach his gospel throughout all the world. Peter had said to Jesus where would we go- you have the words of life?
Jesus gave those words to us to share with others.

EVE Chapter 2:4-6
Genesis 2:4-6 (multiple passages NIV, King James, American Standard & New Living Translation)
God formed earth & heaven BEFORE any plants & herbs were in the earth. There was no rain nor man to till the land. Yet a mist went from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
Sometimes we meet people and we don't see any life in them. Could it be because there was no man to tell them of the love of God?
for, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things
ROMANS 10:13-15
Even now could God be misting that persons heart to receive that glad tidings? Are you that person that the Lord formed to till the land of that persons heart? Are you the rain that will water the ground where the seed has been planted? Are you that worker of the harvest who will bring forth the fruit of the seeds that have been planted?
And he said unto them, The harvest indeed is plenteous, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth laborers into his harvest.
Luke 10:2
Be prepared to have a ready answer and therefore rescue those who are in bondage to the god of this age. Pray that the Lord will send workers of the harvest. Pray that we will obey the great commission & that we will mature in Christ Jesus. Pray that the Love of the Lord Jesus Christ will be shed abroad in our hearts.
I charge thee in the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

EVE Chapter 2
EVE Chapter 2- Host , finished, blessed ,sanctified, rested
Genesis 2:1 -3
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
It is important to know when our work is finished. I have sometimes "finished" something before it was complete. That kind of work is shoddy and full of errors. Then there have been times that my work was complete and yet I kept working it. The finished product then looked very little like the original work. Knowing when to continue and when to cease from our work is sometimes difficult for us. How do we determine when something is finished? Do we give up when it gets difficult? Are we anxious to get on with the next project? Are we bored with the work we been given? This has been some of the reasons for handing in shoddy work.
Why do we keep working on something that is finished? Are we insecure about our abilities? Are we perfectionist? Are we afraid to go on to the next project?
How do we determine when something is finished?

Delilah - Judges 16
What are the differences and similarities between Delilah and Samson's first wife?
Why do you think that Delilah was the only woman who was mentioned by name in these chapters?
Were there different motivations of each woman for betraying Samson?
Do you believe that one of the women were more justified than the other?
Could/Should either the 1st wife or Delilah refused to betray Samson?
Do our motives matter? If so why and when?
What were the different approaches Delilah used to find Samson's weakness?
What do you think of Samson's first response to Delilah's request?
Was there lack of wisdom in his response? Was his response sinful?
How might he have responded differently?
What are some approaches you use to gain your objectives?
If your original approach doesn't achieve your goal- what do you do?
What finally worked for Delilah/the 1st wife? Where else in scripture can we find that this approach worked?
What was the source of Samson's strength?
Was it significant that his hair began to grow again?
What is Samson's final act?

Delilah- Judges 15
Do you think it was up to Samson or his wife to seek reconciliation?
What assumptions did Samson's Father in Law make about Samson?
Why do you suppose the Father in Law made assumptions about Samson?
Why was Samson angry with his wife?
Was he right to be angry with her?
Why do you think Samson responded the way that he did?
Should Samson have dealt only with his Father in Law and his rival?
Why is Samson more blameless than the Philistines?
What effect would Samson's revenge have on the Philistines?
How did the Philistines respond to Samson's revenge?
Considering why Samson's wife betrayed him and then the response of the Philistines...how should we respond when threatened?

Ruth....the discussion continues
Ruth what a great great discussion! We spoke about whether Naomi and family should have left Bethlehem-Judah during the famine. Did you know that Bethlehem meant bread and Judah meant praise? Did you know that Moab represented a place of sin (a worldly place)? So Naomi and family left a place of sustenance and joy for a place of sin. Naomi and family left Bethlehem, move to Moab and returned to Bethlehem was compared to Jesus leaving heaven, coming to earth and then returning to heaven.
Both of Naomi's daughters accompanied her on her way to Bethlehem. Naomi advised them to return to their homes and find husbands. Orpah agreed to return home but Ruth insisted on staying with Naomi proclaiming that Naomi's God would be her God. Some of us could relate to Orpah wanting the sure security of home rather than face the possible hardship with Naomi. We also saw that this could relate to Jesus' parable about how some would fall away.
Naomi's family moved from Bethlehem to Moab-Ruth lived in Moab and returned to Bethlehem with Naomi...could this be symbolic of the coming together of Jew and Gentile awaiting the return of Christ Jesus our King?
Boaz' instruction to Ruth not to glean in another field but to only glean in his field --- included his provision and protection for Ruth. We'd be wise to glean only in the field of the Lord and remain under His protection and provision.
Boaz represents Jesus and Ruth represents the Bride of Christ. Does the near relative represent the Law?
What was the purpose of taking off the shoe?

Esther - The discussion
Thank you to all the women who participated in our discussion of Esther. We discussed how the world might be viewing our relationship to Jesus. We are called the Bride of Christ - do we honor and respect our Bridegroom? Does the world see the reverence we have for Jesus?
When the Lord ask something of us - how do we respond? We also discussed the importance of prayer and fasting. Seeking and waiting upon the Lord. Esther had called for three days of prayer and fasting. She did not do this alone but asked that they all join her in this time of fasting and prayer. On the third day Esther went to see the king.
Is it right to disobey the law? Both Mordecai and Esther had disobeyed the law of the king.
The king:
When the king was told about the plot to kill him his response was to investigate the truth of the accusation and then hang the plotters. Mordecai role was written in the book of chronicles.
When Haman approached the king to request the death of the Jews the king responded by giving Haman the authority to do so...there was not an investigation about the truth of the accusation.
The king sought counsel on what to do when deciding the fate of Vashti...
The king gave Mordecai authority over what to do about those who would kill them...
Haman
Haman had great riches, power and position and yet it all meant nothing to him because Mordecai would not bow to him.
Haman sought not only to kill Mordecai but all the Jews...
Haman automatically believed that he would be the one whom the king chose to honor...
Mordecai

Esther

Submissive, respectful and obedient to Mordecai
Submissive and respectful to the king

Mordecai with the kings authority wrote that the Jews could defend themselves against their enemies. Then because of the position and authority the king had given Mordecai, many feared the Jews and some because of that fear had joined with the Jews. Several of the women shared that because of our position in Christ we also have that authority to defend ourselves against the enemy of our souls. That we are to do spiritual warfare. That we should know that it is because of our position in Christ Jesus that we have such authority and that it is also because of that position that the enemy fears us. It is not by might, nor by power but by his spirit.
This discussion is open to all. Looking forward to everyone's comment.

Esther Chapter 5
Why did Esther not make her request immediately known to the king?
How do we approach our Lord of Lords and king of kings when our needs seem urgent?
How comfortable would you feel sitting at the same table as your enemy(who wants you and your people destroyed)?
Haman has many reason to feel blessed and happy-yet he is miserable. Why is he miserable?
Could he have chosen to be happy? What could he have done differently?
Have you ever let the enemy steal your joy? Does someone else have control over your joy?
How can we keep ourselves from falling into the trap of being miserable. How can we insure that others do not control our joy?

Esther Chapter One Cont'd
ESTHER CHAPTER ONE
Still taking a time out but dropping in here for a moment...now that you have been thinking about the marriage of leaders and how they affect leadership, how public spats affect the body of Christ...
Let us consider: we as Christians are called the bride of Christ...
what do our attitudes, character and actions tell the world about the state of our "Marriage"
consider your response as the 'Church" and as an individual both as the Bride of Christ...
Are we faithful to our "spouse", does the world see that we truly hold Him, Jesus Christ our Bridegroom in high esteem, are we the bored spouse, are we the "flirty" spouse, are we the adulterous spouse, are we the open - marriage spouse, the spouse of convenience, the complaining spouse, the adoring spouse, are we a stranger to our spouse, are we frigid and aloof, are we the newlywed, ....you get the idea...
In chapter two Esther and the other women are in a time of preparation...if anyone already knows what that involves ...please share...

I Too Will Be Taking A Time Out
For awhile I have felt that I wanted to write/comment and did not know what to write/comment.
I know that the Lord has asked me several times in the last few years to come away and spend time with Him. I confess I have not really responded with my whole heart. I have not given the Lord my full attention. I even doubted that I heard correctly. I know that others are also experiencing this call and are taking time away from blogging. I just read Edie's blog about taking a time out and sense that I also need to finally heed the call. So I too will be taking a time out.

Questions- Esther Chapter One
Esther Chapter 1
As you read Chapter one...consider the marriage of king Ahasuerus and queen Vasti..
what role does marriage of leaders play in their ability to lead? How can the marriage of a leader affect those that they lead? What are your thoughts on public disputes between married couples?
Can public outburst be avoided? How so? If not then what remedy is there for the outburst?

Passages for Rebekah
One of the things we discussed this morning about Rebekah was why did she deceive Isaac? How could she? When I first read this I was focused on Rebekah's deception. She knew God and heard from God; she knew what the promise was for Jacob. So I had wondered why she felt the need to deceive. Here was a woman of God and yet she didn't turn to God as she did when she was pregnant. I began to wonder how and if I would have acted differently...Rebecca knew God's plan for Jacob but she hears Isaac say that he is going to bless Esau...did she act in panic fearing that Isaac would thwart God's plan? Had she taken the time to think and process her actions I believe she would lean on God in full confidence of His being able and faithful to carry out His will. This was God's plan after all that the elder should serve the younger.
Something triggered a panic response in Rebecca ,perhaps the immediacy of the circumstance prevented her from seeking the Lord. I know the pressure for an immediate response usually leads me to making unwise choices. When things require my immediate response I should not forget that God is in control and I don't have to panic. That I can trust Him to carry out His plan.
We also discussed how Esau was representative of the old covenant and Jacob represented the new covenant. In the culture of the time the elder son would have been the one to obtain a double portion of the inheritance. It would be his responsibility to become head of the household and care for his family. God had chosen Jacob. Esau sold his inheritance for food. Esau eyes were on the moment and the need of his flesh. Esau was looking for immediate gratification. Had he thought it through perhaps he would have made a different choice. We too sometimes give into our demanding flesh and reap dreadful consequences. Sometimes our flesh cries out so loud it deafens us to hearing wisdom. We say words that may feel good for a moment but the effect of that word brings damage to self and others. We make monetary decisions that bring pleasure for a moment but leave us in debt. When we react hastily it often lacks wisdom. Acting hastily often reveals a lack of discipline. Esau not only acted on his flesh but when the consequences were apparent he did not accept responsibility for his own actions. He not only blamed Jacob but intended to kill him. Some of us are also guilty of placing the blame on others rather than taking responsibility for our own actions. How can we make wise choices when confronted by our own hunger, when the flesh is screaming so loud attempting to drown out the voice of reason? When we do make mistakes how can we change from placing the blame on others and accepting our responsibility for our choices?

Women of the Bible Discussion Series
October 2008 we began our Women of the Bible Discussion Series. We only meet once a month and decided to do a different woman each month. We still had plenty of unanswered questions and things that we would like to discuss further. This blog is being set up so that anyone interested can continue the discussion. This will be a work in progress. So far we have discussed Deborah and Jael (October), Mary and Elizabeth (November), Sarah (December) and this Saturday we will be discussing Rebekah. I hope to post on Rebekah by Saturday or Sunday. Thank you for your patience as I work on setting up this blog.
